KDDI Lab Displays Voice ID System for Mobile Phones
July 22, 2005
KDDI R&D Laboratories have successfully developed a prototype voice identification system for mobile phones. This system, with a current error rate of 1%, is slated to be ready for practical application in two years.

With the voice ID system, users are allowed to do internet banking via mobile phones, while no password input or additional procedure is required. After connecting to the website of a financial institution and inserting an ID number, users are asked to read numbers out loud as instructed on the screen. The voice is then converted into data and sent to a server, where it will be verified against pre-registered voice data. The total verification process can be completed in approximately ten seconds. The system is designed to streamline user authorization and minimize the risk of unauthorized use resulting from password leaks.
